Teaching English in Taiwan – Does My Race Matter?

It might not have crossed your mind before but teaching English in Taiwan at most schools isn’t as straight forward as you may think. The many privately owned schools in Taiwan place great importance on the skin colour of the teachers they hire. This doesn’t mean that you won’t find any teachers who aren’t Caucasian, but the majority of schools prefer to hire teachers with Caucasian heritage. Without putting it too bluntly, if you are a white teacher in Taiwan you have a much better chance of getting a job at one of the many common cram schools than if you aren’t white. This is obviously racism, but schools and parents continue to support this way of thinking. If you aren’t Caucasian does this mean you will be able to find work? No, but it does mean that you will have much greater difficulty in finding work compared to someone who is.

Career as a Pediatric Nurse

It is typical for a little girl, when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” for her to say a teacher. I was one of those little girls. Whenever asked that question, I would always respond with wanting to be a teacher. I would sit there with my stuffed animals and conduct a class with my scribbled lesson plans in crayon. The idea of being able to come up with a different lesson each day challenged me enough to get excited about becoming a teacher. I was able to share my knowledge with others.

When I went into middle school, I realized there was more to life than just teaching. I wanted to get a little further into the minds of children and help them with their problems. A school counselor sounded like a great idea. I liked to help my friends with problems they were having and I liked being a problem solver all around. I continued this into high school. My sophomore year I took a psychology class. During psychology class, we learned more about adults and the changes that affected their minds over the years. The idea of being able to help older people with their problems along with children made me want to become a family counselor or a family psychologist. It would allow me to specialize in more than one area.

The second semester of my sophomore year, I began taking medical classes like health science and emergency medical services. These classes opened a big door for me toward the medical field. My junior year came around and I was only required to take chemistry, but I took anatomy and physiology along with it. My medical classes intrigued me to go into the medical field.

Not too long ago, someone said to me, “What do you want to major in when you go to college?” It reflected the same question I had been asked when I was younger. I stopped and thought way back to when I conducted my class of stuffed animals, helped my friends with problems, learned about the adult mind, and the hands on experience I had with my medical classes. I had to somehow tie all of my dream jobs that I had throughout my life into one compact idea. I took the dream of working with children, the dream of helping others, and the dream of an experience in the medical field and turned it into one big dream.

I want to become a pediatric nurse. I have had all the dreams a person could have in the course of my life, but this is the one that will make the difference. This job will allow me to fulfill each aspect of my dream job that I have been grasping for. I cannot wait for the day that I get to go into my job and know that I am going to make at least one child smile or one child’s day better because it’s my job.

Best Career for Me

Taking in a sweetly scented breath of fresh air, I reached for the door-handle and anxiously marched into a new and exciting time in my life. The weight from the stacks of papers tugged at my briefcase, slowing my brisk trot down the hallway toward my classroom.

The hallway wasn’t the same as I’d last remembered it eight years ago. It’d been bursting with teenagers full of life and excitement. Now the hallway was empty with its freshly painted lockers and newly polished floors. As I walked past the gymnasium and the boys’ locker room, I took in a new aroma. It was a pleasant change from the sweat smell that usually accompanied the territory.

As I turned the corner, I spotted it, room 218. The big white numbers stood bold against the black oak door. When I walked into the room, a rush of excitement surged throughout my body. I looked around the plain, little room where I’d spend the next nine months inspiring young minds.

My eyes were then drawn to a rectangular desk and chair across the room. I skipped on over to it and plopped into the chair propping my feet on the desk. In thirty minutes the room would be filling with thirty tired-looking teenagers annoyed that they had to get up so early for the first day of school, and I had to motivate them to learn.

I thought back to when I was their age. Those last two years in high school were jam-packed with ACT review, exams, and deadlines. That was also the time when I had to make a choice that would affect the rest of my life. It was the most important choice I was ever going to make in order to be happy and successful, and that was choosing a career.

Choosing a career is a huge decision because it determines how you will live the rest of your life. Your career determines where you live, your standard of living, and your sense of fulfillment and happiness.

Little does anyone realize it, but from the day they walk into their kindergarten classroom, they are preparing for adulthood. Each year that goes by, they are one step closer to choosing a career. Then before they know it, it’s time to make the big decision based on their interests and abilities.

Now here I am on my first day as a teacher. I worked diligently to get where I’m at, and it’s only the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in my life.

Suddenly a piercing sound followed by the noise of slamming lockers interrupted my thoughts. As the students dragged into the classroom, I knew I’d made the right career decision. Even though they don’t look eager to learn, I am eager for the challenge and opportunity to inspire them. All of my uncertainties about my career decision vanished. Teaching is my love and my passion. I am determined to help these students reach their full potential.

A Career in Writing I choose

I’m one of those rare people who have known exactly what they’ve wanted to do with their life for a long time. I remember the day in second grade when my teacher asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I looked her straight in the eye and said, “I am becoming a writer”. She laughed. I guess she was expecting the standard little-girl answer, the one all her other students had given her: ballerina, professional horse rider, or princess. But I knew that wouldn’t make me happy. I would only be happy if I could write for a living.

I’ve been making up stories since I can remember, and I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I want to sell millions of copies and have an international fan base, providing me with much opportunity to travel, learn about other cultures, and become multilingual. If I were an author, I’d go on book tours often, autographing copies graciously and lecturing intelligently on a number of literary issues as well as on my own work. My trusty laptop would accompany me everywhere, and I’d often be seen in locally owned cafes, working on my latest masterpiece.

My books would be geared towards adolescents and would provide them with creative and clever material to both inspire and entertain. As a writer, I would make it a priority to ensure that my work was of highest quality, but still an easy and enjoyable read. My books would be like the great classics: full of symbolism and commentary, but also original and captivating. It would be my goal to make sure that reading doesn’t become an archaic pastime, replaced by hobbies of the “electronic age”, such as web surfing and video games.

Being a writer would provide me with many unique luxuries not afforded by the typical office worker, or career woman. I’d be able to work out of my home, choose my own hours, research topics of my own interest, and express a variety of ideas to a wide audience. There would be no dress codes, no pressure for promotions or raises, and no on-the-job stress. Writing is not a potentially life-threatening career path (as firefighting and police work is), nor does it require many years of study, constant training, or a strong stomach- all necessities of a career in medicine. Writers, unlike lawyers, and politicians, are not responsible for making potentially life-changing decisions on a regular basis. It is for these reasons and more that writing is the ideal career for me.

I believe that reading is important for the development of young minds and is essential for sustaining creativity in adulthood. It is a beneficial pastime that helps build vocabulary and grammatical skills (which need improvement in today’s world of “sk8r bois” and “skool grrls”). Reading is an enjoyable and stimulating activity that has certainly enriched my life. I can only hope that reading my stories will enrich someone else’s life, someday.
