These are normal, typical occurrences in places like Georgia and Tennessee. When you have to move out west to California for an engineering job with your family, you really have to make an adjustment on the way you live your life. You certainly can’t wear a gun on your hip in California, and everyone who sees your deer hunting t-shirts are going to look at you like you’re an alien from space.

It took me a while to realize that it wasn’t just because I’m a redneck that people looked at me funny, either. There are so many different kinds of people out here who are trying to make it into showbiz that you’re bound to see rednecks, punk rockers, and Canadians all standing in the same line for a Jamba Juice. No, you can be from the country here…you just can’t be an animal-killer who wears deer hunting t-shirts.

You will get yelled at and almost physically assaulted if you wear anything like deer hunting t-shirts in California. They are all ranting and raving about Freedom of Speech and Expression out here, until you start expressing something that they don’t like. Good luck getting out of a crowd of angry people if you get cornered. It’s like a feeding frenzy!

I try to tell my folks and friends how it is out here, but I don’t think they really understand. My mom still sends me deer hunting t-shirts every birthday and Christmas without fail. When my contract is up, we’re moving back to the south where real people live. I’m losing the shirts and the accent, but the south will always be in my heart.

The wooden parts usually rotted away thousands of years previously, but a wooden longbow from the same period was found in Somerset. Most probably, people had been using all wooden, single piece bows long before they started constructing complex composite recurve bows.

The skill of archery has always enthralled mankind and, despite the fact that guns have made archery outmoded, it still fascinates people today, although these days archery is practically exclusively used for recreational purposes. It is a thriving sport and hobby and is the national sport of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

If you are interested in practising archery, you will first have to make your mind up which kind of bow you prefer. Among other varieties, there are the longbow, recurve bow, reflex and decurve bows, deflex bow, pyramid bow and crossbow.

To a certain degree, the arrows are not interchangeable either. For example, a longbow can shoot a three foot, heavy-gauge arrow, whereas a crossbow shoots a six inch bolt. The bows also had different uses although there was a certain degree of overlap.

For example, longbows were the heavy, rapid-firing armaments of their day, being able to fling a heavy, armour-piercing arrow hundreds of yards; whereas a short recurve bow was ideal for assault from horseback. Crossbows took less ability to use but were slower than a bow.

There are different types of arrow as well. Traditionally, arrows were made of wood with a sharp metal tip, but these days arrows can be made of aluminium or carbon fibre. The arrowheads are distinctive for different uses as well. A plain brass tip is sufficient for everyday shooting whereas a ferocious, slashing broadhead is used for killing.

The majority of people who take archery seriously use carbon fibre arrows nowadays which is the typical arrow shaft used at the Olympic games. The flights are usually of bird feathers and are used to steady the arrow in flight to minimize wobble. Plastic flights are also to be had as they are less susceptible to damage.

The Welsh (and English) longbow was perhaps the most powerful hand bow widely used. These longbows were typically six feet or more in length and made of one section of seasoned yew (or other woods). The draw weight of a Welsh longbow at the time of Henry VIII was between 160 -180 lbf and that would shoot a heavy three ounce arrow up to about 280 yards.

An explanation of the damage that one of these arrows could inflict was given by Gerald of Wales in the 12th century:

“… in the war against the Welsh, one of the men of arms was struck by an arrow shot at him by a Welshman. It went right through his thigh, high up, where it was protected inside and outside the leg by his iron cuirasses, and then through the skirt of his leather tunic; next it penetrated that part of the saddle which is called the alva or seat; and finally it lodged in his horse, driving so deep that it killed the animal”.

It took years of practice to draw and shoot one of these longbows bows accurately.

Your number one concern, however, should of course be the safety and freedom from injury of the dog first and savings last. If you intend on building this box yourself, it might be advised that you use very thick wood.

Using strong wood helps you to secure the blocks with L-brackets, while ensuring that the wont protrude into the interior of the box. You should indeed triple check this, of course. Ideally, also using precise measurements when having your wood cut will aid in guaranteeing ease of securing the box to the walls of your truck on both of the sides. The hunting dog box should provide ample ventilation, and allow the animal to peer outside to prevent a strong fear response.

If you provide the hunting dog box with a place to hold some treats and water it’ll enable the dog to maintain a more relaxed state on its hunting trips as well. This is highly important, because if your hunting dog is highly anxious then it will, of course, be a bit more rifle shy than it otherwise would have been. What point is there to owning a hunting dog that’s fearful of the sound of a rifle, I ask you? My answer: there is not a point. So make sure your dog’s comfort is high on list of priorities.

One last component to be discussed to the dog box is the entrance and exit. You should indeed implement a safe latch which has all of its components only physically accessible from the outside of the dog box. It is also important that it is easy to get your dog or dogs in and out of the box itself. If this is challenging, you’ll find it intensely frustrating both for yourself and the hunting dog. Letting your hunting hound get accustomed to the box while it is still young, and before long trips can make it easy to get him or her into and out of it when the time comes for a new hunting adventure.
